What is IYONG

IYONG is a resilient economic response to the Manipur Conflict undertaken by Matai Society, starting in August 2025. IYONG is also a locally woven fabric that has supported thousands of rural weavers for decades. Known for its durability, authenticity and intricate designs, this fabric is now at risk as powerlooms replace handlooms and traditional markets shrink. The current Manipur Conflict has worsened the situation by displacing hundreds of weavers and disrupting market flow.

Our Story

In May 2023, thousands were displaced overnight in Manipur, losing homes, lives and livelihoods. IYONG was started through the collaborative efforts of Manipur Weddings, Urep, Mahei Centre and Matai Society to rebuild livelihoods for those affected by conflict. The first training for "The School Bag Project" was led by Ojha Tomba from Churachandpur, who was displaced on May 3, 2023. IYONG continues to grow in the hands of weavers, displaced persons and colloborators.

Impact

In just one year, IYONG has employed 35 people and supported multiple relief camps and internally displaced persons (IDPs). Our base is at Khoyol Keithel Relief Camp, with three other units at Horticulture Sendra Relief Camp, Water Sports Complex Laisoi Relief Camp and in Bishnupur District, Manipur. Together, we have raised over 5 lakhs in 20 months and showcased IYONG at events like the Rainbow Literature Fest in Delhi and The Rainbow Room and Bridge in Kolkata.
